Srikanth Kidambi
He can be undoubtedly termed as the badminton players to
watch out for in future. With his current performance and history strikes in
China Open Super Series he is surely the star of Indian badminton. We are talking about Srikanth Kidambi
popularly known as K Srikanth. Born on 7th February 1993 in Andhra
Pradesh Srikanth hails from a very simple family. His father KVS Krishna is a
landlord, and his Mother Radha is a house-wife. Srikanth started playing at a very
young age and was recognized for the first time in 2011 at Commonwealth Youth
Games in Isle of Main, winning the silver is mixed doubles and bronze in
doubles.
He also won the singles and double category at the All India
junior International Badminton Championship in Pune.
The very next year defeated the than Junior World Champion
Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia in the Maldives International challenge to claim
the Men’s Single Title. He is currently
the highest ranked Indian men’s player in badminton circuit. In 2013 Thailand
open Garand Prix Gold event Srikant won the Men’s single title, beating the
world number eight and local favourite Boonsak Ponsana in straight set.
Same year he claimed his first senior national title, All India Senior National
championships defeating reigning champion and Olympian Parupalli Kashyap.
Srikant was also one of the prominent member of the Awadhe Warriros team and
finished second in the Indians Badminton contingent that reached the semi
finals of the Mixed-team event at the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.
On 16th November Srikanth won 2014 China Open
Super Series Premier after beating Lin Dan By 21-19, 21-17 and become the first Indian to win a Super Series Premier Men’s
title.
K Srikanth trains at the Gopichand Badminton Academy, Hyderabad and
is supported by the GoSports Foundation,
Bangalore and has been part of their scholarship programme since 2012.
